Montjuïc cemetery is a real treasure of valuable funerary art. Apart from its vast surface of 56 hectares, the sea views from this graveyard up on the hill of Montjuic are spectacular (some parts of the Spanish movie “Todo sobre mi madre” by Almodóvar were recorded here).
Although being a silent place of the dead, Montjuic Cemetery is like a miniature city full of modernist architecture and sculpture, plants and cypress trees. It was opened in 1883 after a boom of population and became a spot for the rich people to build their own mausoleums here. As a result, you can see some of the most beautiful examples of funerary art made by architects, sculptors, stained-glass artists and other craftsmen.
* Montjuic Cemetery is included in the Route of Montjuïc, free of charge. This is an original way to discover the city and its society from the past, and ideal for those tired of the huge tourist masses.
